ARIANNA TESTA
Hi, I'm trying to connect a file Excel (.xls - 32bit) with ampl and I don't know how to properly create a file.dsn to make it work.
May someone help me?

RE: [AMPL 15189] error reading table with table handler tableproxy: could not connect to Modello.dsn

Robert Fourer-2
AMPL looks for the .dsn file in the current folder, which is normally the folder that contains the ampl.exe file; this may not be the same as the folder where you have your data.  If you think that Modello.dsn is in the current folder, then try using ".\Modello.dsn" instead; if that does not work, give the fully qualified name for the file, which would be something like "C:\Users\Xyz\AMPL\data\Modello.dsn" (though of course different on your particular computer).

If you continue to have problems, copy the entire error message into your reply to this email, and also show the entire AMPL table statement that you used.

RE: [AMPL 15214] error reading table with table handler tableproxy: could not connect to Modello.dsn

We understand that you are running 64-bit AMPL with 32-bit Excel.  Is that correct?  If yes, here are some additional troubleshooting steps that will help in reading the Excel file:

-- Execute the AMPL command "option version;" and send us the output from that command.

-- Check that the three files ampltabl_64.dll, ampltabl.dll, and tableproxy32.exe are in the same folder as ampl.exe.  (If any are missing, you can get them by downloading an unzipping http://ampl.com/demo/ampl.mswin64.zip and then copying them over.)

-- Send us the file Modello_SubOttimizazzione.dsn as an attachment to your reply.

-- In the Windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools / ODBC Data Sources (32-bit).  You will then see a small windows with "ODBC Data Source Administrator (32-bit)" in the heading at the top.  Send us a screenshot of that window.

-- When the error window "Accesso driver ODBC Excel non riuscito" pops up, click "OK" and then take a screenshot of the IDE window and send it to us.

RE: [AMPL 15256] error reading table with table handler tableproxy: could not connect to Modello.dsn

In your screenshot (4) there is a data source name "Excel Files" but the corresponding driver does not exist.  To see whether you have a driver, click Aggiungi.  Then you will see a window like this:

If possible, select "Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls)" (or the equivalent in Italian) and click Finish.  Then another small window will appear, in which you can enter "Excel Files" for the Data Source Name and click OK.

If you cannot find an appropriate driver in the list in the above window, then you will have to download and install the latest version of the 32-bit drivers from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=13255.  (You may need to scroll down to see the installation instructions.)
